Group urges FG to compensate pipeline explosion victims.

The Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) has asked the federal government to compensate the families of the 11 persons who died in the 2016 pipeline explosion at Agip’s oilfield in Southern Ijaw Council of Bayelsa State.

It urged the government to start paying the bereaved families to alleviate their sufferings.

A statement issued in Abuja by the national coordinator, Sheriff Mulade, noted that oil spillage should be taken seriously with all the attention it deserves through relevant agencies to discharge statutory obligations to the people.

He noted the necessity of urging the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to plan a familiarisation visit to oil-affected sites, particularly in the creeks, and interact with host communities in the region.

“With a special focus on re-orientation, peacebuilding, environmental best practices and human rights, the agency should extend its programmes aimed at ensuring pollution-free and environmentally-friendly oil exploration,” it added.
